The hotel

Situated overlooking the seafront of Zanzibar, Tembo House Hotel is surrounded by historic buildings and magical views of some of the islands. It has a small intimate beach in front of it but swimming here is not recommended.  Rather use the hotel's pool as it is cleaner and a lot safer. The front terrace provides a nice quiet spot to sit and watch the amazing East African sunsets. In keeping with strict Muslim law, they do not serve alcohol. A short distance down the road you will find a couple of pubs which should satisfy your thirst. The hotel is very well kept and the rooms small but comfortable. Many large tour operators use the hotel for their groups, so it is a good choice if looking in this price range.

The rooms

The hotel has been revamped in the past year, and there are basically two sections. The old section has small almost dingy rooms, whilst the newer rooms are a lot more spacious and comfortable with a magic view of the pool area and the ocean. The furnishings are again typical Zanzibari style. Each room has their own bathroom, mini bar (with water and sodas) air conditioner, television and telephones. It is almost impossible to guarantee that you will get a room in the new section of the hotel. Somehow the staff keep on messing the bookings up, but we will try our best in any case.

The facilities

The facilities include:

  • Swimming pool for guests.

  • Conference facilities.

  • Curio Shop.

  • Marine Sports. Trips are arranged by the hotel out to various islands.

  • Dhow excursions.

  • Picnics can be arranged along the coast or to nearby islets.
