Wolwedans Dune Lodge

Introduction

Situated in the middle of the NamibRand Nature Reserve are the many different Wolwedans resorts. All of the camps provide their guests with the best opportunity to experience Namibia, Africa’s beautiful nature and wilderness, as well as the many animals that call this part of the world home. While each resort in the Wolwedans’ family offers guests individual attention, warmth and personality, they are all unique in their settings on the reserve and give a chance for the guests to get closer to nature than ever before.

Wolwedans is located within the NamibRand nature reserve and is about 20 kilometers from the reserve’s main gate. Guests who are planning on driving from places such as Windhoek will need to hire a four-wheel drive vehicle as many of the roads are gravel and dirt. The Dune Lodge is the first accommodation guests will come to and serves as the main reception area for all of the Wolwedans accommodations. Children are welcome; however, they are the responsibility of the parents and no type of babysitting service will be provided. They are expected to be well-behaved.

The Dune Lodge is the main reception area for the four different Wolwedans’ accommodations. It was completely rebuilt seven years ago and the new design includes two lounges, multiple sundowner decks, a library, a wine cellar, two dining rooms, and a tea deck. There is a swimming pool at the lodge and numerous communal areas that offer guests a wide range of recreational pursuits while they are there.

Rooms

There are nine chalets at the Dune Lodge that are built on stilts, keeping the sands of the desert from getting in. The rooms are tented and the canvas walls can be drawn up so that guests can enjoy the free flow of air around them. Each tent has a private veranda, en-suite shower, solid wooden bed, and mosquito netting.

There is also a Mountain View Suite available at the Dune Lodge. Located within walking distance of the main lodge, it is built on 200 square meters of decking that rises above the dunes and is perfect for a honeymooning couple. It is equipped with a King size bed, en-suite bathroom, shaded patio, hammock, lounge, dining area, bar cabinet and open plan kitchenette. It also has a unique ‘star gazing’ bed on the main veranda as well as a sundeck.

Dining

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the Dune Lodge with dinner being taken at the communal table or outdoors, usually accompanied by the resort’s hosts.

Activities

Visitors to the Wolwedans’ lodges have the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of activities thanks to the locations of each accommodation on the NamibRand Reserve. Guide safari drives are available on a full or half day basis with a picnic lunch provided for the full day drive. These drives take visitors through the reserve and offer them many photo opportunities of the native flora and fauna that call the dunes their home.

More adventurous guests will enjoy taking a hot air balloon ride or scenic flight that travels to the Diamond Coast of Namibia and Sossusvlei. These activities usually occur in the afternoon, providing guests with a spectacular view of the multi-colored dunes as the sun is going down. Those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground will enjoy the guided walks and hiking opportunities in the reserve. A two day hike into Losberg Mountain is being planned for future guests.

The Wolwedans management is in the process of developing sleep outs for all of their resorts. These sleep outs will allow guests to sleep under the stars on the dunes. All that would surround them and platform beds would be the air and the wide night sky above them.
