Windhoek Attractions
Windhoek is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Namibia. It is located in central Namibia in the Khomas Highland plateau area.
Christuskirche
The church is a prominent landmark in Windhoek's historic centre that was built in 1910 to accommodate the Lutheran congregation in the city. Today the sandstone church is a national monument topped by its 79ft (24m) spire.
College of Art
Situated in Fidel Castro Street, The College of Art was originally used as a court and later converted to the State Conservatoire. The structure now houses the College of Arts.
Das Reiterdenkmal
Situated in Robert Mugabe Avenue, this equestrian bronze statue (1911) commemorates the soldiers killed in colonial wars in the early part of the century.
St Georges Cathedral
Situated on the corner of Love and Sinclair Streets, this is the smallest functional cathedral in Southern Africa and was built in 1924. The bell in the tower was one of a set cast for St Mary's Church in Northwall, Canterbury. On the same grounds is St George's School with its unusual Mansard roof. The school is today used as a kindergarten.
Alte Feste (Old Fortress)
Situated on a high point overlooking the CBD, the Schutztruppe Fort served as the German colonial powers' military headquarters until 1915 and today houses the state museum. It foundation stone was laid in 1890 making this one of the oldest buildings in Windhoek and a significant national monument. The museum's exhibition informs visitors of Namibia's history from its san (Bushmen) origins to German occupation in 1884 and the resulting struggle for independence.
Heroes Acre
Heroes’ Acre is a modern, state-of-the-art national symbol that was inaugurated by His Excellency, Dr Sam Nujoma, Founding President of the Republic of Namibia, on 26 August 2002. Its construction was motivated by the need to foster a spirit of patriotism and nationalism, and to pass on the legacy to the future generations of Namibia. Heroes’ Acre took 13 months to construct and covers a total area of over 732 hectares. It houses 174 graves, is 286.7 meters long and has a width of 134.2 meters. It has a parking area of over 9 824 m2, while a three-kilometre palisade fence protects the monument.
Kaiserliche Realschule
The first German high school in Windhoek dated back to 1909. It served as an English-medium school after World War II and is today part of the offices of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Old Location
Once a township for blacks on the western edge of Windhoek it was demolished on 10 December 1959 as part off the Union National Party's enforced apartheid campaign of the 1950s. With the groups divided ethnically, the suburbs of Katutura and Khomasdal were formed.
Oude Voorpost
Built as a government survey office by the German government in 1902, it now accommodates the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
State House
The residence of the former colonial governor and administrator general, the building is presently the residence of the President of the Republic of Namibia. It was built in 1959.
The Old Supreme Court
This 1907 building, situated in Lüderitz Street, was once the Supreme Court, this building now accommodates the Regional Court.
The Station
This station was built in 1911 with and an additional part added (keeping strictly to the original style) in 1929.It is an important station, a center point of the Trans Namib railway. It has lines which lead eventually to Tsumeb, Oshikango, Gobabis, Keetmanshoop and Upington, South Africa.
Tinten Palast
Situated in Robert Mugabe Avenue, designed by G Redecker, built by Sander & Kock in 1913, the Government Building has housed a series of successive governments. Today, in the independent Namibia, it houses the National Assembly.
Turnhalle
Since 1913 the Turnhalle has played an important role in the history of Namibia. Converted into a political conference room in 1975, it is currently used as a conference centre.
Zoo Park
This lush, green park comprises a landscaped garden with a pond, children's playground and open-air theatre. With the Chinese Pavilion that symbolizes the friendship between the people of Shanghai and the people of Windhoek.
