Voyager Beach Resort is an all-inclusive 3 star beach resort on the Nyali Beach, 7km north of Mombasa. The resort is easily reached by road and approximately 40 minutes drive from Mombasa Airport. The Resort was built in 1974 and fully refurbished in 1999. All the buildings on the property are thatched and blend in well with the surrounding palm trees and lush gardens. The entire hotel is decorated to a nautical theme complete with masts, sails and ship's wheels. The staff are called by naval designations and the manager is the Captain. While definitely different, we found this a bit over the top.
The rooms are somewhat dated but comfortable and a number of them overlook the pretty beach. The waters are safe to swim in as the whole coast is protected by a coral reef about a kilometre off-shore. While the beach is worth visiting, the local hawkers that frequent the site can be a bit off-putting. They normally respond to a strong 'no' and aren't too intimidating though.
Voyager is a great family resort with tons of things for the kids to do. They offer high chairs and cots, a babysitting service as well as a childrens club for kids up to 12 years of age. The club runs from 10am to 6pm and offers the little ones great activities and games. There is also a childrens pool and a play area specially designed to keep them entertained for hours.
While Voyager is really popular and usually quite full, there are loads of space, both indoors and outdoors, ensuring that you never feel cramped. The resort has three freshwater pools, each with a different use. First theres the sports pool for all kinds of activities, then the quiet pool overlooking the beach (no kids allowed at this one) and lastly the fun or leisure pool. This one has a kids pool, a fun waterslide and a Jacuzzi plus a sail awning to provide shade on particularly hot and sunny days. We loved the fact that we didnt have to use our own towels as we were supplied with the resorts towels at the poolside, free of charge. The pools are great for cooling down, catching some rays on their sun loungers or simply to spend some time catching up on a good book under the shady canopies.
Dining is included at two of the three restaurants, while the third offers a 50% discount to guests. The dishes are large and plentiful, especially the hearty breakfasts of pancakes, cakes, fruit, omelettes and just about anything else we could think of. We unfortunately found the service a bit lacking and detrimental to our otherwise enjoyable stay. The resort has its own glass bottom boat which is quite popular. It takes you out to the reefs and gives beautiful views of the marine animals, colourful corals and even a sea turtle or two. If you are in to fun-packed, activity-filled days, you wont be disappointed at Voyager. Not only do they have a water sports centre that offers windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, snorkelling and other great sports, but the resort also provides daily entertainment programmes and family shows to keep you amused. There is an 18-hole golf course situated nearby as well as a crocodile farm, nature reserve and Kenya's top coastal hotel shopping arcade. But if youre after a relaxing holiday away from the commotion of modern life youll also find it here. The staff respect the needs of the guests and wont pressure you to take part in the hotels itinerary. We highly recommend the quiet pool if youre after some rest and solitude while still making use of the resorts great facilities. Voyager promises something for everyone, and we can vouch for that! If youre after that dream beachfront holiday this is certainly the place for you.
You’ll have quite a choice of dining options at the Voyager Beach resort. They have four restaurants to choose from and a good selection of meals to keep any hunger at bay.
The most interesting restaurant is the Smugglers’ Cove, an a la carte restaurant situated in a concealed coral cove on the property. This ‘hidden treasure’ is known for its great seafood and grilled meat. We loved the coconut prawns and seafood salad starter, and the red snapper and lobster main course is also worth a taste. If you plan to dine at Smugglers’, we recommend that you reserve ahead of time, as it is quite popular. If you’re after something a bit lighter, the Minestrone Restaurant should suffice with its Italian table d’hote dinners and light lunches. Pastas and pizzas are obviously the most popular, but they also serve a selection of other good dishes.
Another cheerful spot is the Captain’s Table, situated on the outdoor terrace. Apart from its good food, this restaurant also offers great entertainment from the resort’s senior staff. And if you enjoy fun themes and coordinated décor, the Mashua Restaurant should be right up your alley. This buffet restaurant offers hearty Ethnic, Continental and seafood meals as well as full English breakfasts, including varieties of breads, fruit, omelettes and cakes. Lunch and dinner includes roasts, soups, salads and stir-fries, and changes daily.
Snacks are also available during the day from the Lighthouse Coffee Shop next to the cyber café. You’ll find a good selection of sandwiches for that afternoon snack between having fun and chilling out, as well as that much needed ice cream after a long day in the sun. The meals at Minestrone and Mashua are included in the package while you get a 50% discount at the Smugglers’ Cove. They also cater for vegetarians, so you needn’t worry if the seafood and grilled meats aren’t in your taste.
There are also three bars for late night snacks, drinks and live entertainment. You have a choice of the Lookout Bar with its great views of the Indian Ocean, the poolside Kaskazi Bar and the Harbor Lounge Bar that stays open 24-hours a day!
All three restaurants require men to wear long trousers in the evenings.
Voyager Beach Resort is a three star hotel with 232 large cabins. Roughly a third of these cabins overlook the ocean while the remainder have garden views. The buildings are two and three-storey thatched units surrounded by rows of lush palm trees.
All of the cabins have private balconies, air-conditioning, telephones and electronic safes and are decorated to a nautical theme. There are four room types: Gardenview, Superior Gardenview, Seaview and Superior Seaview. The Gardenview rooms overlook the palm-rich gardens while the Seaview rooms have great views of the ocean. The superior rooms come equipped with ceiling fans, hair dryers, satellite TVs, mini-bars and tea and coffee making facilities and are larger than the standard rooms, while the Superior Seaview Rooms are closer to the beach.
Deck A has 68 Superior Cabins and three large Junior Suites. These all have large balconies overlooking the gardens or the ocean and private lounges. There are a couple of Business Cabins with added executive conveniences for those whod like to stay in touch with the rest of the world, while 24 of the cabins are interconnected and ideal for families. All the room types offer wheel-chair friendly facilities and most of the public areas are easily accessible.
