Zambezi Sun

Back to accommodation guide

Zambezi Sun

The Zambezi Sun is a fairly classy and colourful three star resort on the banks of the Zambezi, right next to the Victoria Falls. Both the Victoria Falls and Livingstone Airports are situated nearby (10 and 30km respectively) and Livingstone Town is a few minutes away by car. The hotel forms part of Sun International’s new The Falls resort complex on the banks of the Zambezi and is the sister hotel of the Royal Livingstone.

The guest rooms have been built in a circle surrounding the large, uniquely shaped swimming pool, and closely resemble a walled city. The adobe-style architecture is earthy and understated. The rooms are bright and airy with colourful fabrics and mosaic patterns, while the room finishes are simple, clean and practical. We really liked the bathroom mirror designs.

The falls are only a stone’s throw away and the cloud of spray can be seen from various parts of the hotel.

Mealtime is exciting as there are various options of dining facilities available, from the hotel’s central dining room to the Poolside Grill, the coffee shop, restaurants, steakhouse and of course - room service. There are even vending machines close to the guest rooms to satisfy that niggly craving for something sweet.

The Zambezi Sun is ideal for families as it has a Kamp Kwena kids club, babysitting facilities, cots for babies, tons of activities and great meal options.

A butler is available to you (included in some of the packages) from 7am to 11pm. His services include laundry and valet, room service, organising your activities and any other little things you can think of. We thought this was really cool!

The free-form pool is very popular and an ideal spot from which to enjoy the resident jazz, blues and impromptu bands that play in the evenings. The pool deck is also the venue for more formal ‘do’s’ such as cocktail parties and candlelight al fresco dinners.

Feeling lucky? The resort has its own casino and bar, situated in the entertainment area. There are 77 slot machines, each operated with a smart card. This coinless option is more convenient and works really well.

If you’re after relaxation and pampering, the hotel offers various types of body and foot massages by the poolside while the Royal Salon offers manicures, pedicures, personalised facials, hair removal and hair care for men and women.

The Zambezi Sun is choc-a-block full of perks, from the butler service to the babysitters to the outdoor massages. It’s ideal for families looking for that extra bit of luxury, coupled with tons of activities and entertainment. This is one place where you’ll never get bored!

The Zambezi Sun is quite colourful and has a selection of interesting perks such as the butler service, the live bands, the great kids’ facilities and its proximity to the falls. While it isn’t a rustic Zambian retreat, it offers great activities and a friendly vibrant environment.

The rooms

The Zambezi Sun is a 3 star hotel with adobe-style architecture. It has a very ethnic feel to it which is accentuated by the colourful mosaics and bright fabrics in the rooms.
There are eight buildings which house the guest rooms, a central pavilion of restaurants and a well-equipped air-conditioned convention centre.

The room types include standard suites, standard twins, standard kings and family rooms. There are also two paraplegic rooms for disabled guests. These are easily accessible by wheelchair and have handrails in the bathroom plus twin beds.

All in all there are 212 rooms offering a variety of views. The rooms are decorated in bright earthy colours that project a distinctly Zambian influence. These are bright and airy and quite comfortable.

All the rooms are air-conditioned and come standard with satellite television, a mini safe, mozzie repellant wall units, a telephone, as well as a tea and coffee-making station. We found the close-by vending machines with ice, drinks and snacks quite clever, especially for that midnight craving!

The rooms have private shaded balconies that overlook either the greenery or the landscaped pool. The bathrooms are spacious and all have separate baths and showers.

Thirty nine of the rooms have queen size beds and sleeper couches while the remaining 167 have either two double beds, a queen size bed or two separate single beds. For those who prefer even more luxury and space - we recommend the suites.

Dining

The Zambezi sun offers a variety of dining venues, each with its own specialities. In the main dining room the chefs prepare the meals in full view of guests – quite interesting.

The large restaurant serves breakfast and dinners of a high standard and has indoor and outdoor seating.
The dinners are great, starting off with interesting entrees such as crayfish corn chowder, crocodile terrine, and carpaccio of ostrich marinated with basil and mustard. The main meals include large salads, original vegetable dishes and meat and fish creations. The desserts are quite unique and include interesting creations such as the chocolate ravioli and paw-paw coulis.

Lunch can be enjoyed at the al fresco Poolside Grill next to the entertainment floor at the pool.

The Squires Grill steakhouse, another good lunch and dinner venue, is situated at the Falls Entertainment Centre and is open from noon ‘till 11pm. Their kitchen is also used for room service meals.

And if you feel like having a nice cup of coffee with a croissant or a pastry, you needn’t go far. Fego’s coffee shop offers a great selection of pastries, cakes, coffees and teas as well as light meals.
