Situated next to the entrance of the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia, Africa, on its own 43,000 hectares of private reserve, the Sossusvlei Lodge offers guests breathtaking scenery in a desert landscape that is filled with amazing wildlife including the Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra. It is the only area in the world where this unique animal can be found, and when added to the geological history of this part of Namibia visitors will discover a whole new world to explore. The Sossusvlei area is actually a huge pan that is rimmed by dunes. The pan fills with water when there is heavy rain fall, and flamingos and other water birds can be found there.
The lodge is accessible by small aircraft and it is about an hour flight from Luderitz, Swakopmund and Windhoek. Once guests arrive at the lodge, they have the unique chance to see the dunes and the park at dawn and nightfall. The lodge has won medals for its excellent accommodations and services and they make it a point to cater to their guests to make their time in Namibia the most enjoyable ever. The staff can also easily arrange any type of gathering – such as a wedding – and they will cater to those guests who are physically challenged, offering wheelchair friendly rooms and amenities.
In addition to accommodating their guests’ every need, the staff at the Sossusvlei Lodge also practices eco-friendliness. The entire resort has been designed to be easy on the unique desert area, including efforts to blend into the surroundings. Electricity, heating, water and waste management, the layout of the lodge and the activities they offer are all eco-friendly.
The lodge has an Adventure Center that guests can use to plan their day trips as well as a large swimming pool that is open 24 hours a day for those days guests wish to stay in. There is a curio shop with gifts and other items that educate about the Namib Desert and Namibia. There are two bars located on the premises as well as a guest telephone and laundry facility. There are no phones in the guest rooms and cellular service is not available. There is a large satellite television in the main lodge as well as a restaurant with adjoining paved patio. Guests who enjoy the bar will also enjoy overlooking the small waterhole that attracts birds, small animals and Oryx.
There are 45 en-suite rooms at the Sossusvlei Lodge that are equipped with three-quarter beds that sleep two comfortably. All of the rooms have the same layout and are made of adobe walls with canvas roof and slate floors. Each room has an entrance hall and a veranda. The windows are of an open design with sewn in mesh and are covered with canvas that can be rolled up or down as needed. All of the rooms are equipped with the following standard amenities: personal safe; rotary ceiling fans; walk-in showers; writing table with two chairs; vanity table with mirror and stool; private furnished veranda; bathroom mirror; wash basin; flush toilet; toiletries; luggage rack; and built in wardrobe.
The lodge is known for the buffet dinner it serves. It is served outside on the terrace overlooking the waterhole and it can include everything from the soup of the day to sumptuous desserts. The food ranges from traditional African cuisine to international dishes and guests with specific dietary needs can be accommodated. Breakfast is usually a continental or full English breakfast and lunch is usually a buffet or ala carte menu.
There are two bars at the resort. The main bar offers guests soft drinks, alcohol, mineral water, wine, beers from Namibia and Germany, and other cocktails. It is located next to the swimming pool. The courtesy beverage bar offers guests water and warm beverages, and is located in the main lodge’s reception area. It is open twenty-four hours a day.
The location of the Sossusvlei Lodge offers guests a wide variety of activities to enjoy. The lodge itself has an Adventure Center which guests can use to enjoy planned activities in addition to private ones. While staying at the lodge guests can enjoy desert air flights that give them a scenic, bird’s eye view of the area or a hot air balloon ride for a more relaxed atmosphere. Excursions in the Namib-Naukluft Park are available at dawn and sunset and they usually last around five and half hours.
Nature drives are also available and guests can enjoy a guided tour through the lodges 43,000 hectares. They will have the chance to see a wide variety of wildlife that calls the area home. The drives are about four and half hours long and include refreshments. There are also guided sunset walks available as well as eco-quad biking.
