Guests who are looking for a unique taste of Africa will love Satao Camp located in the Tsavo National Park, Kenya. The camp is rustic and wild but relaxing and awe inspiring as guests take in the wildness of the area for themselves. The animals are as much residents of the camp as the staff that runs it and the guests who visit it. The staff at Satao are dedicated to making the stay the best possible for their guests and this unique accommodation will provide them with an experience they’ve never had before.
It is not unusual for guests to see waterbucks and impalas wandering around the camp. Satao was built around the animals’ migratory route. Tamarind trees grow throughout the resort and many of them have been growing there for over 100 years. There are nine lions that visit the camp on a regular basis every night, getting close enough for guests to view as they eat dinner. Bird call, elephant trumpets and neighing zebras greet the day with their song and this is a great way for guests to wake up to in the morning.
Satao camp is personalized for each guest and it is one of the most sought after accommodations for guests to enjoy if they are looking for photographic opportunities. Tsavo East National Park is one of the least visited parks in the Tsavo National Park system, which allows guests to enjoy the wildlife and wilderness without being interrupted by numerous other tourists. Additionally, this is the home of the maneless lions of Tsavo and it is the only park in Kenya the lions call home. Guests will enjoy safari drives in half-open safari vehicles, allowing them the best chance to see the wildlife up close and personal.
Tsavo National Parks include Tsavo East and Tsavo West and it encompasses 21,000 square kilometers of African bushland. It is the oldest and largest park in Kenya, covering close to forty percent of all of the countries national park system. The landscape is beautiful and it is close to the coast with one of the world’s leading biodiversity strongholds. Bushy grassland, open plains, acacia scrub, woodlands, river banks and coastal area make up the park. Guests have the opportunity to see all types of African wildlife. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, serval cats, antelopes, kudu, oryx and more are the animals guests can see. Additionally, there are over 500 bird species in the park that include ostriches. It is also the home to one of the largest elephant herds in Kenya.
The camp is set up in a semi-circle around a central water hole, situated among the tamarind trees. There are twenty en-suite tents that are arranged so everyone can see the watering hole and any additional ‘guests’ that may be there. There are sixteen family tents and four suites for guests to enjoy. Each unit is constructed of boroti poles and sisal that is finished off with a makuti roof. They are designed so that only the front of the unit looks like a tent. Each tent includes a patio with table and chairs.
All of the tents are furnished with beds and other furniture that have been made by local craftspeople. They also feature a private bathroom with running water. The showers are traditional African style where staff members supply hot water every night. Antique writing desks and African designed bed and cushion covers finish off the effect
The staff at Satao Camp provides guests with exciting and tasty meals. Breakfast includes choices such as pancakes, omelets, continental fare and fresh fruits when in season. Lunch is served beneath a beautiful 200 year old tamarind tree and dinner is served in the lounge area of the resort’s main lodge. Guests can also enjoy vegetarian or special diet fare if required and at the end of the day they can gather around the camp fire for evening beverages or watch animals from the observation tower at night.
While staying at the Satao Camp guests have the unique opportunity to take a driving safari through Tsavo East National Park. All of the guides are knowledgeable about the animals that live there, and there are plenty of chances to see Africa’s big five animals as well as many other animals and birds that live there. The safari vehicles include cold boxes for storing drinks while they are out exploring the African countryside.
When guests return to the main lodge they can enjoy sundowners around the fire where champagne is served. It is recommended that guests bring anti-malaria pills with them before entering the country.
