Residence Lapasoa in Antananarivo Madagascar

The Hotel

Lapasoa Hotel is a relatively new hotel in a lively area of Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar, is housed in a large colonial-style mansion with an attractive brick facade and iron balconies. At least half a dozen restaurants are situated close by, along with a good selection of shops and boutiques.

The reception area is small but attractively decorated with traditional Malagasy artifacts, and the staffers are very much on the ball, offering the sort of personalized attention one would expect of a family-run boutique-hotel.

Attached is one of the trendiest meeting spots in Antananarivo, the ground-floor Kudeta Restaurant and Lounge Bar, whose excellent Franco-Malagasy fusion menu is complemented by the decor, a pleasing combination of traditional and modern Malagasy crafts and art. Cold draft beer, a wide selection of local and imported wines, and eclectic music make this a great spot to chill out, though sensitive nonsmokers may prefer to try one of several nearby and quieter smoke-free restaurants.

Rooms are large and have an airy uncluttered feel, with wooden floors, whitewashed walls, wooden framed beds, and in most cases a small balcony or window offering views across the city center. Facilities include TVs, tea- and coffeemakers, telephones, safes and air-conditioning. The tiled baths have walk-in showers, basins and toilets, but no tubs.

Residence Lapasoa is widely regarded as the top boutique-hotel in the Malagasy capital, and its funky decor and the proximity of the trendy Kudeta make it an excellent choice for younger couples and single travelers. For fussier clients and elder travelers, it isn't as safe a bet as the more conventional Hilton or Colbert, both of which are typical high-rise city hotels, but relatively bland and stuffy.

Dining at Lapasoa

The Kud'ta is highly regarded in Antananarivo. The decoration is Indonesian and Malagasy, especially warm: armchairs red, yellow walls of the past, Malagasy paintings, wooden tables, elegant presentation, wrought iron lamps, rosewood carvings ... The food is tasty, international and Malagasy, toujouts varied: carpaccio with chanterelle mushrooms and zebu pistou sauce, carpaccio grouper to the Japanese jumped to the snail sommeroise, camaron on a bed of grilled bananas, spices of the island, roasted mango with orange liqueur. The Chinese and Indian parties are organized. The restaurant seats 48 people. The restaurant serves up to 23h and the bar remains open until 1am.
