Namib Naukluft Park

E-mail

The Namib-Naukluft Park is Namibia's largest nature reserve, about 50.000 sqkms in size. It includes a 100 to 150 km broad belt of land that stretches along the coastline from the Swakop valley in the north, towards the road to Lüderitz in the south. The park encompasses part of the Namib Desert which is the world's oldest desert, having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for at least 55 million years. Most parts of this enormous area are not accessible to man. One can only visit a small stretch north of the Kuiseb River: the Naukluft Mountains and the Sossusvlei in the central dune fields. The highlight of a visit to the Namib Naukluft Park is a trip to the Sossusvlei. It lies within the Central Dune Namib, which is, with an area of about 32 000 sqkms, the largest part of the park.
