About Mumbo Island

Mumbo Island, Malawi is a pristine and “deserted” tropical island, and the undisputed jewel of the Lake, Malawi National Park. Mumbo Island has never been populated, and is still in its natural state with a thick covering of miombo woodland and ancient fig and baobab trees.

The waters around the island are clean and calm, and allow all guests - irrespective of fitness or experience - to enjoy sea kayaking, snorkeling and SCUBA diving. The island’s only mammals – Spotted-necked Otters and Cape Clawless Otters - are remarkably playful and love to join guests for a snorkel or swim.

Freedom and quality island time - together with a good dose of healthy outdoor fun - is what visits to Mumbo Island are all about. The only fixed items on the itinerary are meals, and guests are otherwise free to choose between activities, exploration and leisure. Pre-breakfast swims, which redefine the term “refreshing” are highly recommended.

Rooms

The intimate, tented camp, accommodating 14 guests, comprises tastefully furnished, comfortable tents with hot bucket showers and 'eco-loos'. The camp is perched on rocks high above the water and blends in perfectly to create a place of rustic charm and minimal impact. Tucked into the lush foliage, each tent is fully furnished with its own shaded view-deck and hammock. There is a dining area, bar and water sport gazebo, all constructed from timber, thatch and canvas, and all adhering to the principles of eco-architecture.

Dining

Meal times are flexible, depending on activities, and arrival and departure times. A hearty breakfast of fruit salad, freshly baked bread, eggs and bacon sets the tone for the day. Lunches and dinners feature an array of salads, fresh fish, chicken and vegetable casseroles, curries, stir-fries and pasta dishes.
