Encircled by beautifully kept, mature gardens and a vibrant animal sanctuary, the Mount Meru Lodge in Arusha, Tanzania reminds of a colonial retreat straight out of the memoirs of Livingstone.
While relatively young in years, the old-style charm of Mount Meru Lodge has attracted various international delegates, heads of states and European royalty. The lodge is easily accessible by road - a welcome change from the various destinations only accessible by boat or plane or both. Upon arrival, guests step into an environment alive with wildlife and exotic plants, based at the centre of a 33 acre game sanctuary unique to the Arusha area. The sanctuary's "Presidents" include Cape Buffalo, Zebra, Eland, ostriches, waterbucks, small carnivores, Monitor Lizards and a variety of colourful birds.
The main focus of the sanctuary is to provide a safe haven for injured and orphaned animals. Its enclosed rehabilitation area offers refuge to an assortment of owls, eagles, tortoises, a porcupine and even a crocodile. The sanctuary owes its sustainability entirely to the lodge. We like this part as we could pride ourselves in the fact that our stay not only served as a great getaway, but also contributed to a good cause. The staff of Mount Meru Lodge go to great lengths to keep their colonial style gardens well manicured and in a perfect condition. We recommend the shaded terrace as the best viewing spot from which to observe these gardens. Various venues are available where guests can relax, converse, view and enjoy what Mount Meru Lodge has to offer. Amongst these the gazebo definitely stands out and is the perfect setting for any event, be it formal or informal. Its private terrace is a breath of fresh air for those used to boardrooms and commercial conference centres. It is also the place to be on a Sunday, as traditional English roasts are served, buffet style. This speciality is especially popular amongst the locals, and attracts a variety of interesting people.
We were pleasantly surprised by the collection of fine wines on offer in the dining room , with a variety to complement every meal. The bar is also fully stocked with spirits, beers and minerals.
The combination of the Usa River that runs through the grounds and the peaks of Kilimanjaro, visible from the lodge, make for really great views.
Interesting visitors to the grounds include Black and White Columbus monkeys, Sykes and Vervet Monkeys. The squeamish needn't worry as they keep to themselves in the trees and don't bother guests. They are, however, a lot of fun to watch. Bush babies and even a Servile Cat have also been spotted.
Mount Meru Lodge and Sanctuary is the ideal retreat for visitors in search of old-style tradition coupled with beautiful natural surrounds (a paradise for animal lovers!).
The lodge has 8 double and 9 twin en-suite bedrooms, each with their own individual character and style. We could choose from single, queen and king size four-poster, wrought iron beds, all fitted with mosquito nets, continental quilts and custom sized pillows to fulfil our every need. We particularly liked the private terrace (all rooms have one) with its comfortable loungers from which we could observe the surrounding greenery and wildlife.
Disabled guests will be pleased to know that two of the lodge's rooms have been converted into disability friendly environments. Their large interiors ensure easy access to the main communal areas situated close at hand, including the sanctuary. Sleeping options include twin-beds as well as a king sized bed for more flexibility.
