The Mnemba Island Hotel

About Mnemba Island

What can we say, we are suckers for the islands. This island is the playground of people like Bill Gates and Naomi Campbell and is one of the most fantastic places found in East Africa. Situated on the Northeastern coast of Unguja it has been voted by Conde Nast as one of the three most romantic places in the world. This says a lot! Only housing a maximum of 20 guests, you can be assured of the highest standard of service. Many people worry as the island is so small that you might not have privacy.. never. The staff are discreet  and attentive, always knowing when to give the guests private time, and when to come over and have a chat. The trip out to Mnemba is about an hour's drive from Stone Town to Matemwe. From there you board a boat which takes about 20 minutes before you are in heaven. The theme is take your shoes off and relax and boy can you!! Situated on the Mnemba Atoll, some of the finest diving reefs are found and no power boats are allowed near the place. This means marine life live with no fears and continue undisturbed. By far highly recommended.

Rooms at Mnemba

The island shelters only 10 bandas built on the beach. Bandas are hand-woven palm mats shaped into a hut. All bandas have en-suite shower-bathrooms and a private verandah. There are no windows or doors, but the same palm mats ensuring your privacy. It is awesome! All rooms are furnished with the underlying theme of style and more style. The  decor is simple white cottons which blend in completely with the island atmosphere. The beds are huge and can be made up into doubles or twins. Each bed has mosquito netting, which is apparently not necessary as the island has been declared malaria free. There are no favorites in terms of rooms as they are all the same. Built strategically in the sand amongst the forest trees, you are able to have complete privacy.

Basket loads of tropical fruit and freshly caught seafood arrive by ngalawa outriggers. These are whipped into mouthwatering platters and served buffet style for lunch. Elegant feasts are served for dinner either in the open-air dining room or at tables lit by flickering hurricane lamps on the beach under the stars. If you prefer, your meals can be taken in the privacy of your beach cottage. Needless to say, the service at this lodge is highly professional.

In keeping with the tradition of CC Africa lodges, Pan-African cuisine is served. You'll also notice a slight Mediterranean and Moroccan influence. A typical meal may include West African-style curried corn and coriander soup with Naan bread; spicy chicken with grilled bananas and ginger chutney, roasted beef with caramelised onions and chilli with cumin potatoes and followed by homemade vanilla ice cream with macadamia nut praline and slow-roasted rum-soaked pineapple. Oh yum.

Breakfast consists of a variety of hot and cold options. Special diets are catered for with prior notice.

Being the island that it is, there is not much that you really want to do.
