Matemwe Beach Village

Situated on its own long stretch of white sand beaches, the Matemwe Beach Village is located on the north east coast of Zanzibar Island.  It is not far from the Mnemba Atoll with its circling reef, and divers simply love this area for the diving opportunities.  There are numerous palm-thatched villages around the resort and guests will meet natives who still fish for a living.  The staff makes it a point to offer guests the best hospitality possible while they visit.
The lodge is set among the palm trees along the beach and the main area of the lodge is open on two or three sides and faces the beach.  The main lodge building features a lounge, restaurant and bar.  The lounge is unique in that it is a slightly raised area that features floor cushions and low tables.  Books and games are provided for guests who want to take a break from the sun and beach.  The bar was recently extended to provide guests with more space and there are additional beachfront seating areas available.

Rooms

Guests can enjoy one of three different room types at the resort.  There are five suites available as well as seventeen standard rooms and the Asali suite which is perfect for honeymooners.  The suites are designed for couples and include a large bed in the bedroom upstairs.  A single bed and barazza bed are also provided for children, and the suites include an upstairs veranda with lounge chairs overlooking the beach.  The seventeen guest rooms are split into two rows.  Seven of the rooms look over the beach while the other ten are set further back.

The Asali suite includes one double bed and it includes its own plunge pool plus outdoor bathroom.  It is separated from the main lodge.  The suite includes its own dedicated staff to cater to the guests needs.

Each of the rooms includes the following amenities standard: en-suite bathrooms; ceiling fans; air conditioning; mosquito nets; garden or beach views; and veranda with lounge chairs.

Dining

The resort offers guests a central restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Because the resort is small and off the beaten track, the menu selections are small.  The cuisine features locally grown produce and fresh caught fish.  Vegetarians and diabetics can request special meals from the chef.  The bar serves a wide variety of drinks including South African red wine.

Activities

The Matemwe Beach Village recently renovated their swimming pool and guests can enjoy the new sun deck while swimming in the pool.  Additionally the pool offers novice scuba divers a place to practice their basics before heading out to the open waters to explore the coral reefs around the island.  There is a full five star IDC PADI diving school at the lodge for guests to utilize in order to be able to swim around the atoll.  Divers will enjoy the variety of sea life that lives around the reef and they can see turtles and dolphins as well as whale sharks and pilot whales.

The island of Zanzibar also offers guests a wide variety of activities and historical attractions to view.  There are many beaches with lagoons and coral reefs to explore as well as scuba diving in some of the best unexplored waters in the world.  The waters are filled with dolphins and guests can take dolphin spotting tours where they may even be able to swim with them.  Some of the historic sites include Stone Town, Jozani Forest, Mbweni Ruins, Mtonil Ruins, Kidichi Persian Baths and the Mruhubi Ruins.
