Located in Egypt and overlooking the Gulf of Aqaba, the Le Meridien Dahab is an internationally acclaimed resort known for its diving and surfing opportunities. The resort is located in the heart of the Sinai Peninsula and it is a 45 minute drive from Sharm El Sheikh, a city on the southern tip of the peninsula between the Red Sea and Mount Sinai. The city itself is well known for diving and surfing as well and it is the home of the Sharm el-Sheikh Hyperbaric Medical Centre. Founded in 1993, the medical centre assists with diving related illnesses and is part of the peninsula’s full service diving destination.
The resort – and the entire area – is known for its beautiful and fine gold sand beaches complete with swaying palm trees. The administrative centre of El Qura is on the southern bay of Dahab with the Bedouin village of El Assalah to the north. The Bedouin village offers visitors a great place to shop for unique Egyptian items as well as many restaurants that give the area a bohemian feel. The village leads to Blue Hole, which is a well known diving and snorkelling area.
The resort has 182 guest rooms and suites complete with terraces and sea views. It currently includes a shopping arcade for guests to enjoy, and by the end of the third quarter of 2009 there is to be a full functioning spa at the resort. Currently there are five swimming pools, a manmade lagoon, an exercise room and a Jacuzzi that will be incorporated into the spa. Two tennis courts, a basketball court, billiard table, and Kids Penguin Club finish off some of the amenities found here, making the resort a very family friendly vacation spot.
In addition to the new spa that will be finished towards the end of 2009, the Le Meridien Dahab will also be offering visitors a new state of the art conference room that will accommodate up to 40 guests for small meetings, workshops, and seminars. This too will be available sometime in 2009 and will include the latest in audiovisual equipment. There may be some fees charged on facilities and services related to the new meeting room that will overlook the sea.
The resort follows a strict policy of serving alcohol to patrons 21 years or older with a valid identification only, and they do not offer cheque cashing services. Additionally, they do not accept pets.
There are 182 guest rooms and suites at the Le Meridien Dahab resort and they are all on ground level. Each room is decorated in warm earth tones that are luxurious and are complete with sitting and work areas for guests to enjoy during their stay – whether it is for business or pleasure. All rooms and suites are equipped standard with the following items: cable and satellite television; deluxe bathroom amenities; non-smoking rooms; hairdryer; LCD or plasma televisions; air conditioning; electronic safe; balcony or patio; mini bar; coffee and tea making facilities; high-speed internet for a small fee; and twenty-four hour room service.
There are adjoining rooms available for larger families, and the Le Meridien Dahab resort will add one extra rollaway bed per room if needed. Families with infants can request a crib for the room free of charge, but guests are required to provide their own bedding for the cribs as the resort does not supply these items.
There are five dining establishments at the resort that feature a wide range of both traditional and international cuisine, making eating there easy as there is a taste for everyone. The Café Omar specialises in baked goods and desserts in a comfortable indoor setting that is relaxed and perfect for everyone who wants something a little sweet to eat. It is open from 11:00am to 9:00pm. Guests to the resort who are looking for a light snack and drinks in the evening will enjoy the Horizons Bar. It is located with views of the pool and the sea and it is open from 6:00pm to midnight.
The three main restaurants at Le Meridien Dahab all feature exciting cuisine from around the world. The Sea Breeze Restaurant serves international cuisine in a comfortable atmosphere with seating inside and out from 7:00am to 10:00pm. Shisha Terrace, open from 4:00pm to 11:00pm, features a great menu of Oriental selections in an outdoor seating venue that allows guests to enjoy the warm air off the Red Sea. Finally, the Vie Restaurant gives guests a choice of Asian cuisine in a relaxed indoor or outdoor setting. They are open from 12:30pm to 3:00pm and then from 7:00pm to 10:00pm.
Le Meridien Dahab lies in an area where water sports of all kinds are the norm. From the resort guests can enjoy swimming in the warm waters of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba, or diving the length of the sea in order to enjoy the underwater world with its colourful and unique coral reefs and sea life. Divers and snorkellers could see manta rays, turtles, moray eels, clown fish, tropical coral fish, dolphins, whales, whale sharks, and hammerhead sharks as they swim beneath the waves. The coastline of Dahab allows divers to simply walk into the gulf to dive as it is kept free from power boats.
Visitors looking for a more cosmopolitan day can visit Sharm El Sheikh located 45 minutes away, or they can simply explore Dahab and relax in the bohemian spirit of this town. The Bedouin way of life is still very prevalent here, and even though they are a minority in Egyptian society today they are still very influential. The Bedouins here welcome visitors to the camps, and sharing a Bedouin dinner beneath the stars is a very unforgettable and special experience that should not be missed. Additionally, the shopping in Dahab offers visitors more traditional items to purchase, perfect for souvenirs of the trip.
The resort itself also offers plenty to do with its basketball and tennis courts, kids club, five swimming pools – of which one is a kiddy pool – a manmade lagoon, and full service spa coming in 2009 that will offer facials, massages, and more. There is a small shopping gallery also located at Le Meridien Dahab and planned poolside activities and live entertainment, letting guests who simply feel like ‘staying in’ for the day relax and do what they want to do.
