Southern beaches
You’ll find a string of white sand beaches protected by a coral reef. These include:

• closest to Mombasa so can be visited on a day trip,
• sometimes affected by seaweed,
• not many budget options.

• just 3kms from Mombasa,
• least developed,
• popular with budget travelers.

| Diani Beach |
• beautiful palm fringed beach,
• very developed with lots of resorts and package holiday tourists.

| Wasini Island |
• see coral gardens, monkeys in the mangroves, parrots in the palms and huge baobab trees,
• snorkel at Kisite Marine National Park,
• discover traditional Swahili culture virtually untouched by the modern world.

Northern beaches
Some of the beaches to the north of Mombasa are plagued with seaweed which can make swimming unpleasant at certain times of the year. On the north coast you’ll find:
Kilifi
• see the Mnarani ruins on the southern bank of Kilifi Creek overlooking the ferry landing.

• an important Swahili coastal settlement dating back to the 14th century
• excellent beaches,
• many tourist resorts,
• rent a glass-bottomed boat at Malindi Marine National Park.

• the marine national park boasts a spectacular coral reef,
