Karafuu Hotel and Beach Resort

About Karafuu

Karafuu has been granted international 5 star rating and is one of the most luxurious on the South Eastern coast but we grade it a 4 star against South African standards.
The huge reception area welcomes you into one of the best beach resorts on the island. The structure is a local thatch called "makuti" and coral. This is quite breathtaking when arriving for the first time. The staff are fantastic, always smiling and greeting you with the familiar "karibu" which is welcome in Swahili. Service is excellent and the food from one of the four restaurants is outstanding.

Rooms at Karafuu

The hotel has 89 rooms, divided into 26 Junior Suites, 35 Cottages and 28 Garden Rooms. The best rooms are the Junior Suites, all with generous sea views situated along the beachfront. These are the only rooms with sea views and are positioned at the top of the slope in the lush tropical gardens. So ensure to upgrade to one of these if a view over the ocean is on your priority list.

The Garden Rooms are a little smaller and situated at the back of the hotel, while the cottages are positioned at the top of the slope in the lush tropical gardens. All the rooms have easy access to the long stretch of beach.

All the rooms have makuti (palm-thatch) roofs and are decorated in a modern style with some Zanzibari characteristics. They are very clean, well-maintained and comfortable. They all have air-conditioners, ceiling fans, mini-bars and telephones. The junior suites and cottages have impressive en-suite marble bathrooms. Each room has its own veranda and the beds have mosquito nets. In order not to spoil the romance of a beach holiday there are no televisions in the rooms. If you need to catch up on news or watch a movie, there's a satellite television room in the main lodge.

We obviously recommend the Junior Suites with sea views, but these are more expensive. If you're not really fussed about the view then the cottages are perfect. If you're not really fussed about the room size or the view, then the garden rooms are just as good.

We highly recommend the cuisine at Karafuu. There are theme evenings, different venues to choose from and you can even have a romantic dinner right on the beach.
There is an amazing choice of three restaurants:
• the main restaurant serving generous buffets
• the a la carte Le Grand Bleu, which serves spicy lobster and other seafood
• Masai Village, where you can taste local Swahili cuisine (weather permitting)

The Facilities at Karafuu Include:
  • 4 Restaurants
  • Boutique
  • Drug store
  • Games room with billiards, darts and table tennis
  • Discotheque
  • Swimming pool for guests
  • Conference room
  • TV Room with
  • Full water sports. This includes skiing, kayaking, deep sea fishing, windsurf school, snorkeling and diving. The dive school supports PADI, SSI AND CMAS methods of diving at all levels.
  • Floodlit tennis courts
  • Volley Ball
  • Bowls
  • Full animation for guests at night

Hi Bianca,
We had again a fabulous stay in Zanzi. The entertainment at night at Karafuu was splendid. The food was good and the sun, sea and accomodation fab. 236 Hurumzi is like a fairy tale, especially the dinner on the rooftop with musicians and dancers. The service of Africanencounters in Zanzi was 100%, seeing the crisis they had to deal with. The only thing that went wrong was Tanzania Airline. But thanks to that, we saw the Kilimanjaro and experienced the excellent service of Kenya Air.
Keep well,

The holiday was just fabulous albeit a little short.
The hotel you can definitely recommend to your clients. Facilities, food and the hospitality of staff is just top class. If you are one expecting fancy rooms, you may be a bit disappointed as the superior rooms are not that grand. I would have rather upgraded to the junior suite and would highly recommend this to prospective visitors in future. The reason being that the junior suites are sea facing with lounging facilities on the patio so you can enjoy the ocean view while relaxing on your porch when it is extremely hot. These apartments are few metres from the shore whereas the superior rooms are far back without see views and have a small veranda with a table and 2 chairs. Nevertheless, on a tight budget the superior rooms are not bad at all if you donít mind a minute walk to the shore and no view of the sea.
The hotel does not have tv facilities in the rooms but does have a communal tv in the lounge area. But then again, who wants a tv when you on an island and have beautiful water to enjoy. I believe that they will have tvís in the rooms within the next 3 months.
Snorkelling and diving are big in Zanzibar so a traveller must take these with. Its almost 30 dollars to hire it there so better to take it from here. You can believe the pictures on the internet because the water is truly crystal clear. I took photos of small fish that are absolutely clear just by standing and looking in so the water is that clear. Generally the beach area is very rocky. Karafuu have built a wall into the ocean which their guests can walk on to get past this rocky patch which is really cool. Lots of people even snorkel in this area and you can see a lot of small fish.
Unlike many hotels, Karafuu have a machine to cleanse their water which is a good thing for foreigners although we still preferred to stick to bottled water. I would definitely recommend full board to any visitor because the cost of drinks and food is very high. A simple non-alcoholic cocktail will cost you almost 4 dollars and almost 3 dollars for a coke to get an idea so the all inclusive option was our best choice. There are no vending machines or stores close by to buy snacks so you have to face the high charges of the hotel if you donít take the all inclusive option. You could get cheap snacks in Stone Town but it will take about 1 hour by taxi just to get there so thatís not much of an option either.
Overall, this holiday destination was a great choice and we really enjoyed it. If I had to do it over, I would stay at least 1 week because there are lots of tours, both 1 day or half day and going to Zanzibar for 4 days just limits opportunities to explore all that the island has to offer.
Thank you for all your effort to get this arranged for us on short notice and in view of our indecisiveness.
Kind regards

Hi Vera
Trust you are well. We are back from a very relaxing and destressing trip. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip, the hotel was good, food excellent, safari blue (entire day of water sport) excursion was unforgettable and great value for money. The people of zanzibar are truly hospitable.
A wonderful and highly recommendable break away from the rat race of everyday life.

Karafuu - Junior Suite

Hi Farzanah
We had a wonderful time in Zanzibar and the service I received from you was exceptional. I travel all the time using different travel agencies, but you are the most efficient agency I have dealt with thus far. What especially impressed me, was the speed at which you gave me a quote and the delivery of the documents was also beyond expectation. I am currently planning my holiday to Singapore for December, itís been 48 hours and I am still waiting for a quote.
It would be wonderful if your company could arrange European/ Far East trips aswell.
Thank you for exceptional service.
Kind Regards,

Karafuu - Garden room

Hi Farzanah
Thanks for following up.
Thank you so much for your assistance with the arrangements, we had the most amazing holiday. We loved everything, from the hotel to the people, the beach, the weatherÖeverything was great. The ground handler was there to collect us from the airport and back again, on the way back they also guided us through the queues at the airport, they also gave us some tips with regards to the island and the people. The hotel staff and management were fantastic. The beach is even more beautiful than in the pictures, we went snorkeling every day. We canít wait to go back again J
Thanking You

Karafuu - Cottage room

Thank you for the mail. The holiday was absolutely awesome!!
Karafuu Hotel Zanzibar was an absolute stunner!! Absolutely loved the luxury and relaxation after the busy Mediterranean Holiday. Again no fault could be found with the staff (who were extremely friendly and welcoming), accommodation or the food and the snorkeling is something out of this world!
