Felucca on the Nile

A visit to Egypt is not complete without a traditional boat excursion on the Nile.  The boat is called a felucca and it is a canvassed sailed vessel that relies solely on the wind to drive it forward.  It has no motor power whatsoever which makes each trip unique with varied itineraries.  As a matter of fact, passengers are advised of this when they first set sail.  Feluccas can carry anywhere from five to ten passengers at a time comfortably and each boat is decorated with rugs and colourful cushions all over the deck.  A canopy is provided to protect passengers from the elements.

Depending on the felucca company you are riding with you will see numerous places along the Nile including Aswan through Kom Ombo, stopping along the way at various points of interest to see the sites.  The ride is very peaceful, and passengers get the opportunity to see the routine life of the sailors aboard one of these unique river craft.  Since most felucca rides are overnight, passengers get to sleep on the deck beneath the stars in the warm Egyptian weather in a tent like environment.  There are no toilet accommodations aboard these ships but the feluccas stop regularly for passengers to use the facilities, sight see and even swim in safe areas of the Nile River.  Bags are provided for guests who need to use the facilities in between stops.

All of the meals are provided by the crew and they also entertain the passengers with music and traditional dance.  Passengers are invited to help prepare meals or just sit and relax.  Life jackets are provided and luggage is stored beneath the main deck of the boat.  Because passengers will be living on the main deck of the ship during the entire trip, passengers are asked to remove their shoes and keep the deck clean for the duration.  A felucca trip on the Nile is definitely something you do not want to miss.
