About Domwe Island

Among the many islands within the Lake Malawi National Park, Domwe Island is the largest unpopulated island, with a circumference of 11km and the peak point of 400 meters above lake level. The island is separated from the mainland by the narrow Ilala Gap caused by fluctuations in lake level over the millennia. At times it is possible to walk to the mainland. As a result Domwe Island, unlike all other Lake Malawi islands, is well populated with mammals which have crossed onto the island during these dry times.

Domwe Island Camp offers visitors the finest island experience coupled by the rich Malawian bush environment. This private camp is located at the west side of the island behind a small beach. The island is the best place to experience and explore Malawi Lake and its environment.

The island is one of the world’s best freshwater diving spots, with its clear water filled with fish indigenous to Malawi. This island size and height gives any avid hiker a wide-range and sometimes challenging nature trails. Kayaking is also one of the islands best activities. You can also paddle along the endless shorelines and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the shoreline.

Rooms

Accommodation consists of three fully-furnished safari tents and two tent sites, complemented by a dining area with bar and a water sport gazebo.

Dining

The camp is managed on a self-catered basis, where guests can make use of the kitchen facilities to prepare their own meals. The kitchen has two full-time staff members, and is fully stocked with fridges, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery.
Basic supplies and some fresh produce are available in the village at Cape Maclear. Monkey Bay (25km away) has a basic supermarket where most simple goods are available. In Lilongwe and Blantyre there are large, modern supermarkets with a full range of goods which would serve to stock one up for the Domwe Island adventure.
