Located near Namibia’s Fish River Canyon and many other main attractions the country offers is the area known as Gondwana. Gondwana is the home of the Kalahari, Sossusvlei, Etosha National Park, the Namib, Twyfelfontein and of course, Fish River Canyon. Each of these areas of the country offers guests a different look at Namibia as they all have their own unique characters that combine together to make this country what it is.
Determining what to see will depend on the individual as they explore this country. The central northern part of Namibia offers visitors the Etosha National Park. The park is filled with native animals such as elephant, rhino, zebra, giraffe, lion, leopard and antelope. It is the perfect place to enjoy a safari drive. The south of Namibia is where visitors can explore the many towering dunes of the desert or see the wild horses that roam the Namib. Fish River Canyon is a must for anyone that visits the country as is the Gondwana Four Desert Tour.
The Sperrgebiet Rand Park is considered a biologically valuable area. It is here that three different biomes come together over 510 square kilometers. Bordering the Nama Karoo and the Namib dunes, the area is peppered with granite mountains, dry riverbeds and plains. It is here that visitors to the area will see the Wild Horses of the Namib and enjoy the beauty of this part of Namibia.
The Desert Horse Inn is located on the Klein-Aus Vista Reserve, two kilometers west of the town of Aus. The main lodge, made entirely of wood, offers guests a curios shop, main reception area, restaurant, bar and sitting room. There is a shaded deck with tables and chairs off of the second floor to enjoy. The restaurant offers guests a 270 degree view of the area and it is spacious with high ceilings. An open lounge and swimming pool have recently been added to the resort.
There are four individual farmhouse rooms and twenty standard rooms at the resort. The farmhouse rooms share a sitting area outside and each bedroom has its own entrance. All of the rooms come equipped with coffee and tea making service and fans. All of the rooms are en-suite.
All three meals are served in the restaurant. Breakfast is a traditional buffet although guests can order an ala carte meal from the kitchen. Lunch is light fare from the ala carte menu and includes sandwiches and salads. Dinner is a three course buffet that includes international and local cuisine.
Guests at the Desert Horse Inn can enjoy a wide variety of activities during their stay, including a relaxing day by the swimming pool. The Namib Naukluft Park is close to the resort and guests can take an excursion to the park in order to see the Wild Horses of the Namib. There are also scenic drives available that allow guests to enjoy the nature and wildlife of the Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park.
There are five hiking trails that start at the resort and offer hikes from two to five hours. Additionally, there is an information center in Aus that offers guests other activities, such as visiting the POW World War I camp.
