Desert Camp

Introduction

Situated five kilometers from the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia, Africa, and the Sossusvlei Lodge, on the 40,000 hectares of Taleni private reserve, the Desert Camp offers guests a unique vacation. This camp is a self-catered establishment where guests cook their own meals in their accommodations or share meals at the communal boma. It is a rugged accommodation for those guests who wish to enjoy more of the outdoors and less of the luxury other resorts in Namibia provide.

It is located in the only area in the world where the unique Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra can be found, and when added to the geological history of this part of Namibia visitors will discover a whole new world to explore. The Sossusvlei area is actually a huge pan that is rimmed by dunes. The pan fills with water when there is heavy rain fall and flamingos and other water birds can be found there.

The camp has a central communal area where guests will get their accommodation assignments and hire the items they will need for their stay, such as cooking utensils, meal packs, firewood and lighters. Additionally guests who wish to also stay at the camp’s sister facility, the Sossusvlei Lodge, can make reservations here. There is a swimming pool for guests to enjoy as well as a full service bar. The communal boma is located near the pool, public toilets and bar and it includes an area for dining and washing of the dinner items.

Rooms

The Desert Camp offers 20 self-catering facilities that are laid out around the central communal area. Each of the units include an en-suite bathroom, kitchenette, veranda that is shaded, twin beds, power points for hairdryers and shavers, barbeque, vehicle parking, bar fridge, two plate stove, washing facility, and tasteful decorations.

Dining

Guests are expected to make their own meals as the camp is self-catering. They can dine at the Sossusvlei Lodge as well. There is a fully serviced bar at the camp that offers guests a wide range of drinks as well as a large screen television for additional entertainment.

Activities

The location of Desert Camp offers guests a wide variety of activities to enjoy. The camp has access to the Sossusvlei Lodge Adventure Center which guests can use to enjoy planned activities in addition to private ones. While staying at the lodge, guests can enjoy desert air flights that give them a scenic, bird’s eye view of the area or a hot air balloon ride for a more relaxed atmosphere. Excursions in the Namib-Naukluft Park are available at dawn and sunset and they usually last around five and half hours.

Nature drives are also available and guests can enjoy a guided tour through the lodges and camps properties. They will have the chance to see a wide variety of wildlife that calls the area home. The drives are about four and half hours long and include refreshments. There are also guided sunset walks available as well as eco-quad biking.

Guests who wish to remain at the lodge for the day can enjoy sundowners at the bar or relax in the swimming pool.
