Located near Namibia’s Fish River Canyon and many other main attractions the country offers is the area known as Gondwana. Gondwana is the home of the Kalahari, Sossusvlei, Etosha National Park, the Namib, Twyfelfontein and of course, Fish River Canyon. Each of these areas of the country offers guests a different look at Namibia as they all have their own unique characters that combine together to make this country what it is.
Determining what to see will depend on the individual as they explore this country. The central northern part of Namibia offers visitors the Etosha National Park. The park is filled with native animals such as elephant, rhino, zebra, giraffe, lion, leopard and antelope. It is the perfect place to enjoy a safari drive. The south of Namibia is where visitors can explore the many towering dunes of the desert or see the wild horses that roam the Namib. Fish River Canyon is a must for anyone that visits the country as is the Gondwana Four Desert Tour.
Gondwana Canyon Park is the home to the second largest natural canyon on the Earth. It is here that visitors can see the Nama Karoo, a quiver tree that is native to the canyon, complete with its yellow flowers. This park is the oldest nature reserve in the country and visitors will see a wide range of flora and fauna when visiting. The Fish River Canyon, part of the park, is located 20 kilometers from the main visitors’ area and provides visitors with the best look of the canyon.
The Canon Mountain Camp is fairly new and it offers guests a great place to stay if they are feeling adventurous as it is a self-catering camp. There is a fully equipped kitchen for guests to use at the main camp buildings as well as a shaded terrace and barbeque area. Because it is located only six kilometers from the Canon Lodge, guests at the Canon Mountain Camp are invited to dine at the Canon Lodge’s restaurant.
There are eight double rooms at the Mountain Camp that can sleep sixteen. Each room is equipped with beds that include linens and blankets, communal showers and toilets, and cooking areas.
Dining at the Canon Mountain Camp is provided by the guests in the kitchen per their leisure.
Additional dining can be had at the Canon Lodge restaurant.
Visitors to Canon Mountain Camp can enjoy exploring the Gondwana Canon Park. The resort can arrange the activities in advance for their guests. A six kilometer morning guided hike will allow guests to see the landscape of the canyon on foot, taking about three hours from start to finish. There are many marked hiking trails visitors can also enjoy. The hiking trails can range from a two to four hour walk and take visitors to places such as Archway Rock.
Instead of a game drive, guests at Canon Mountain Camp can enjoy a canyon drive. This three hour tour will allow visitors to ride in comfort as their guide brings them to three major lookout points along the Fish River Canyon while telling them about the history of the area. More adventurous visitors may enjoy a scenic flight over the canyon or can book a horse riding tour that allows them to see the nature reserve up close.
Visitors who prefer to stay close to the resort can enjoy the swimming pool or can take a short sundowner walk at the end of the day and enjoy a drink while watching the sun set. All activities are provided through the Canon Lodge.
