African Encounters was
born when Karen and Rodger had finished a 2 year
contract in Tanzania. Rodger had been working and living
up in Arusha and Karen was working and living in
Zanzibar. Upon completion of their contract, they came
back to South Africa with nothing really concrete
job-wise. This is when they came up with the idea to
start up a company specialising in tourism to Tanzania.
It made perfect sense - Rodger with his intimate
knowledge of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar and Karen
with her knowledge of Zanzibar and her contacts and
friends she made there.
After a lot of thought, the company was launched in a
tiny cottage in Parkhurst in May 2001. Since these
humble beginnings we’ve progressed to a staff compliment
of 11 people and are very much a family business. We are
the single largest supplier of tourism to Tanzania and
Zanzibar, beating our nearest competitor by almost
double the business (and that is official). We’ve also
progressed into other markets since our inception, and
will be entering a whole lot of new exciting markets
this year. Watch this space!
At African Encounters we interact more like a family
than a business. Everyone is made to feel at home and we
all share in each other’s good fortunes. We try our
darndest to offer the best personal service on the
market, and regularly go the extra mile to satisfy our
clients’ needs. We make a point of visiting every
destination we market – ensuring an honest, no-frills
opinion and a holiday tailor-made to your needs. We even
have a 100% success rate for our staff members who have
climbed Kilimanjaro. So when you are chatting to us you
are getting first hand knowledge, professional service
and by far the best prices in the country.
Our destinations range from value for money, affordable
accommodation to the top end of luxury – all dependent
on our clients’ budget and individual needs. We decided
early on to keep our scope as broad as possible – so as
not to exclude anyone. You’ll find that we can organise
weddings, conferences, honeymoons, family get-aways,
weekends away, holidays in paradise and tons of
activities. Your enjoyment is our utmost concern.
The travel industry is quite stressful and we sometimes
come across the most unsurpassable obstacles known to
mankind. But you can rest assured that we always have
your interests at heart and will do whatever it takes to
keep your plans on track. We can also assist with travel
insurance, advice on things such as what to wear on your
climb up Kilimanjaro, visa requirements and what not to
eat in a certain country.
We are the leading supplier to some of the largest
travel agencies in South Africa. We would like to thank
these agencies like Club Travel, Flight Centre, Harvey
World Travel, Sure Travel and the many others who
continually support us.
We try to offer something no other company offers – and
that is honesty, quality and superb personal service.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. We hope that
your holiday experience with us will be unsurpassable
and one you’ll never forget.
Please take some time to read up on each of our staff
members below.

Qualifications: BCompt, MBA
Career: I worked in a bank before doing my
articles at a firm of auditors. After completion of my
articles I worked as an internal auditor for a
healthcare group. From there I went across to a
tourism group in Tanzania as financial manager, and
was eventually appointed financial director. After 2
years I decided to come back to South Africa, and we
opened African Encounters in May 2001.
African Travels: I have done my fair share of
Africa. My travels obviously include South Africa
pretty extensively, quite a bit of Mozambique,
Zimbabwe, Kenya from top to bottom, Tanzania from top
to bottom and Zanzibar, almost every inch. Egypt has
been my most recent trip, and really enjoyed Sharm El
Sheikh. I have also
successfully climbed and summited Kilimanjaro. If time
weren't such a constraint, I would definitely travel
each and every country.
International Travels: UK, USA, Andorra, France,
Germany, Italy, Austria, Mexico, Cuba
Favourite Africa Destination: The very rural
coastal areas of Mozambique.

Our company has progressed through our basic philosophies
of personal service, enhanced product knowledge,
excellent pricing and superior standards. I am very
proud at how hard the staff have worked for us to come
such a long way in such a short time and have
stringently adhered to these basic principles. Our
growth has been phenomenal, and we are continuing to
grow day by day.

We have a superior product in the sense that we are very service orientated and knowledgeable. All our sales staff have traveled to at least one of the destinations we sell and most have been there more than once. We have a 100% success rate of all staff that have climbed Kilimanjaro, so we know what we are selling. In a short space of time we have grown to one of the main suppliers of SA tourism to Zanzibar and we aim to do the same for Tanzania and Kenya in the near future. Our aim is to be THE tour operator for African destinations. Nuff said!
