Back to accommodation guide Next eastern hotel

The hotel
Matemwe Bungalows is situated on the Northeast side of Zanzibar on one of the finest remote locations and has a magnificent stretch of beach.

This is by far the most recommended guesthouse in Zanzibar, with attention to detail and personal service provided in all aspects. Only 16 fabulous bungalows provide you you with an intimate and peaceful Zanzibar holiday. The atmosphere is easy, and the hosts genuinely make you feel at home.  The superb cuisine is complimented by fantastic sea views of the restaurant.

For the keen divers, the lodge is located a short distance away from the Mnemba Atoll, where you will find the best diving around Unguja Island.

The rooms
There are 15 separate bungalows along a ridge facing the seafront. All rooms have sea views. The accommodation is divided into 3 categories. Four suites, 8 self contained bungalows and 4 shared facility rooms. The suites are larger with lovely decor and interiors. The own facility rooms are smaller than the suites, not as stylish, but still very good. The shared facility rooms are similar to the own facility rooms but do not have their own bathrooms. This should not put any prospective guest off, as only two rooms share a bathroom. If you do not mind sharing a bathroom, then these are good value for money. The suites are obviously our most recommended rooms. All electricity and heating is provided by solar power.

The facilities

Matemwe Bungalows has a full PADI affiliated dive center and their own boat. Snorkeling equipment can also be hired from the hotel.

Guests are able to snorkel and dive on the best reefs around Mnemba. The great advantage that Matemwe Bungalows has is its close proximity to these fantastic reefs.
