If you like all the comforts of a luxurious beach
resort hotel with a few personal touches, Breezes
Beach Club is an excellent choice. It’s also ideally
situated on the east coast, so endless white
beaches, shady palm trees and a dazzling blue ocean
lie in wait.
You’ll find all the expected beach resort facilities
to keep any hint of boredom at bay - dive centre,
watersports equipment, fitness centre (with a gym,
aerobics classes, African dance classes and massage
rooms), themed dinners and even a floodlit tennis
court. You can slip into that little black dress and
boogie the night away at the disco or kick back and
sample cocktails in one of two bars. Life is, after
all, a breeze.
The atmosphere of the main lodge is romantic with
flowing fabrics, draped from the makuti
(palm-thatch) roof, fluttering in the balmy shore
breezes. Hand-carved furniture and antiques add a
touch of Zanzibar charm to the otherwise modern
interiors.
The Eastern side of the island is influenced
dramatically by the tide. At high tide you can
plunge into the warm water and swim out from the top
of the beach. At low tide the water recedes towards
the distant, fringing reef, so you’ll need to walk
out far in the shallows looking at the starfish and
sea cucumbers (and minding you don’t step on a sea
urchin). The gloriously large swimming pool is a
welcome alternative for cooling off during low tide.
This family-owned hotel has been awarded a five-star
grading and strives towards the philosophy of
providing a home from home (if only home was this
good). Families with children are catered for.
The hotel hosts a weekly beach party complete with a
bonfire, sand bar and a steel drum band, and a
weekly pool party with a dj playing great party
music - all a whole lot of fun. Local dancers,
acrobats, live bands and musicians also for part of
the hotel’s entertainment line-up and make for great
amusement.
Breezes has an impressive health and wellness centre
called the Frangipani Spa. Here a professional team
of therapists will pamper you with facial, body,
hand and foot treatments, and specialised massage
techniques. The spa is beautifully decorated with
candles, fresh flowers and flowing drapes and the
spice scented aromas create a truly relaxing
atmosphere.
Although this 70-roomed hotel is smaller than some,
it can get pretty crowded over peak season. So if
you’re desperate to escape the human race, best
choose a more intimate and exclusive setting during
the busy months.
Note: Diving and the hire of watersports equipment
are not included in the daily rate.

| The
rooms |
The rooms at Breezes
Beach Club are situated in lush, palm-lined gardens a
short distance from the beach. All the rooms are
identical in terms of size, décor and facilities, but
the suites have a walk-in dressing room and larger
bathroom. The suites and deluxe rooms are also closer
to the sea than the standard rooms. The deluxe rooms
have outdoor terraces, while the suites have the
advantage of balconies where you can sunbathe in
relative privacy and, from some, enjoy a view of the
Indian Ocean.
Price will probably be the determining factor, but
whichever room you choose you’ll be welcomed with
fresh flowers on your bedspread and have the
convenience of air conditioning, a hairdryer in the
bathroom, a mini-bar fridge, an electronic safe, an
en-suite bathroom and a sofa bed to sleep a third
person. Telephones, the Internet and a television are
available at the main lodge only - after all, the idea
of a beach holiday is to get away from all the noise
and distractions of modern life.
The double-storey blocks of rooms aren’t as
aesthetically pleasing from the outside as they are
from within. The interiors are spacious and elegantly
decorated - clean, modern rooms with just a hint of
Zanzibar. You won’t find the traditional Swahili
furniture and décor, which are a feature of many of
the other hotels on this island.

Dining |
Breezes has four restaurants. In the evenings
Salama provides a four-course table d’hote dinner or a themed buffet with
local entertainment. For something more elegant with views over the ocean,
Makuti offers a candle-lit a la carte menu specialising in seafood (think
fresh lobster and catch of the day). Makuti is quite popular, so make sure
to place your order for dinner in the morning of the day at reception.
Honeymooners are treated to a private beachfront dining area called The
Tides. They only accommodate two people per evening and offer a special
menu (The Tides is also available to non-honeymooners, but make sure to
book in advance).
For lunch, Breakers is conveniently located under the palms on the
beachfront. They’re known for their good fresh meat and seafood barbeque.
Breakfast is a hearty buffet at Salama and afternoon tea and cakes are
served in the lounge. The buffets are generous and delicious, but you
won’t be getting a real taste of traditional Swahili cuisine.
The Breezes restaurants can cater for vegetarians but be sure to let us
know of your special requirements well in advance.
